Choosing the Right Swim Paddle for Your Training

Swim paddles are essential tools for swimmers of all levels, designed to enhance training and improve performance. There are two main types of paddles: resistance paddles, which build strength and power, and technique paddles, which help fine-tune stroke mechanics. At Team Aquatic Supplies (TAS), we carry a variety of paddles in both categories to meet the unique needs of every swimmer. Let’s dive into the differences between these paddles and help you find the best fit for your training goals!

Resistance Paddles 💪

Resistance paddles are perfect for swimmers looking to build strength and power. These paddles are typically flat and larger than your hand, providing extra resistance to your pull, helping to increase distance per stroke (DPS) and overall power.

When selecting resistance paddles, we recommend working with your coach to determine the appropriate size based on your specific needs. If you’re flying solo, our Swim Experts are happy to help with recommendations! A general rule of thumb is to choose paddles that are about 1 cm longer than your hand’s longest point (middle finger). But be cautious—choosing paddles that are too large can strain your shoulders and may lead to injury if used incorrectly or excessively. With the right approach, however, these paddles can be extremely effective!

Some popular resistance paddles we recommend at TAS include:

  • Strokemaker Paddles

  • TYR Catalyst Paddles

  • Speedo Power Paddle Plus

  • Finis Manta Paddle

Technique Paddles 🎯

Technique paddles are designed to provide feedback to swimmers, helping them perfect their stroke technique. While these paddles offer some resistance, their main purpose is to fix specific aspects of your swimming form. They help swimmers avoid common stroke errors by providing instant feedback.

Here are a few of the most popular technique paddles that can elevate your training:

Finis Agility Paddle

The Finis Agility Paddle is a top choice for swimmers focused on technique. It features a unique, strapless design where the swimmer slides their thumb into a slot, keeping the paddle attached solely by the thumb. This design encourages a palm-positive hand position—meaning your palm faces backward during the pull. If your hand slips or turns during the stroke, the paddle will immediately fall off, providing instant feedback. This paddle is great for swimmers who want to improve their catch phase and avoid slippage. Plus, it offers some resistance for added strength training benefits.

Arena Finger Paddle

The Arena Finger Paddle is designed specifically for improving the catch phase of the stroke. By focusing on the fingers, these paddles help swimmers maintain a strong wrist and proper hand positioning throughout the pull. They are perfect for beginners and younger swimmers as their first paddle, offering just the right amount of resistance to help improve technique without being overwhelming. These paddles are ideal for teaching swimmers to maintain a vertical forearm position and avoid allowing their wrist to bend or hand to slip through the water.

Which Paddle Is Right for You?

Whether you’re focused on building strength or improving technique, there’s a paddle designed to enhance your training. Resistance paddles are ideal for swimmers who want to build power and strength, while technique paddles help perfect your form and ensure efficient strokes. Choosing the right paddle depends on your goals, whether you're aiming for a more powerful pull or refining your stroke mechanics.
