I can't give these less than five stars. I can't even use my fins without these, and I have tried.
I have both open toe and closed toe fins that I use. The toe booties have equal importance. In open toe short fins (mine happen to be short), I find that my toes tend to first get irritated and then outright cuts from the rubber (on silicone) edge where the toes go out. The neoprene provides a nice spongy layer without feeling like it is too bulky and squeezing the foot.
For both open and closed toe fins, they are just long enough to protect the upper side of the foot from the edge of the fin. Some people may develop calluses here; I don't. I am not sure if it is because I am older now, but I just don't. Thus, the booties protect the foot, so I can keep using these in my practices.
I should note that I don't ALWAYS use my fins. I use them for strength and speed exercises combine with no fin swimming/kicking, and without the booties that part of the workout is minimized or eliminated.
The construction of the fins is solid and they last a good long time IF you rinse them per instructions and you trim your toenails. I have been purposely lazy to see what would happen if I got lax on either. Without rinsing, the material loses its colour and spongyness. Obviously there is some protection but not what is should be. If you do rinse them, my experience is that they last a year or two (I swim 4-7 times per week and use them for about 15 - 30 minutes in a 1 to 2 hour practice). As to the toenails, once the fin loses the spongy layer, you will quickly create a hole in the big toe (no surprise), but this is entirely related to care. I find it does NOT happen with proper care.
Hope this helps. Sorry no pics, basically they just slip on the the forward half of the foot and even if they fit a bit loosely (better than too tight), they are fantastic for comfort and protection.
