Arena has launched a brand new racing suit called the Impulso, and we had our Swim Experts try it on and review it. To provide a complete comparison, they also tried on the ST Next to assess the differences between the two suits. Here’s our take on how the Impulso and ST Next compare in terms of fit, comfort, compression, and longevity, followed by our final thoughts on which suit might be the best fit for you.
Fit and Comfort
Both suits fit similarly, though the Arena Impulso feels slightly stretchier compared to the ST Next. They both went down two sizes from their training suit size. There was some trouble getting the straps of the ST Next kneeskin over the shoulders, but the Impulso was much easier to pull on and get into position. This makes the Impulso a great option for swimmers who may find the ST Next a bit more restrictive due to its stitching and firmer material. For both the kneeskin and jammer, what stands out most about the Impulso is its flexibility. It uses high-quality Italian woven fabric, which makes it much more flexible and comfortable than the ST Next.
Compression
When it comes to compression, both suits offer moderate support, but the Impulso feels slightly more compressive in the legs compared to the ST Next. However, it's important to note that suits in this range aren't as focused on high compression as some of the top-end models. Instead, they are designed for swimmers to become accustomed to racing suits and compression, while offering both a performance boost and a confidence-enhancing look.
Durability and Water Resistance
One of the standout features of the Impulso is its durability. It’s made from a higher quality fabric that is more durable than knitted fabrics and retains its shape over time. Unlike the ST Next, which can start to stretch out over time, the Impulso will hold up better against repeated use. The Impulso also has low water absorption and retains its hydrophobic properties longer. Overall, the material feels much closer to that of the Carbon Air and higher-end suits. It’s lighter and more flexible, making it more comfortable. For parents concerned about their kids’ growth, the kneeskin’s straps offer some stretch to accommodate growth.
Cost and Suit Choice
If you're looking for a suit that offers performance at a reasonable price, the Impulso is a fantastic option. It’s very similar to the discontinued R-EVO, which was known for its resemblance to the higher-end Carbon Air in terms of compression and feel but at a lower price point. If you are familiar with the R-EVO, then you’ll love the Impulso. The only notable difference is the R-EVO had taped seams while Impulso has flatlock seams. The Impulso provides a great alternative for swimmers who want to step up their game without committing to a high-end suit.
Conclusion
Both the Arena ST Next and the Arena Impulso are excellent choices, depending on your needs. If you want a suit that offers flexibility, comfort, and durability without breaking the bank, the Impulso is the clear winner. Its Italian woven fabric, moderate compression, and low water absorption make it a fantastic option for swimmers who want both performance and comfort. The Impulso is priced at $220 for the jammer and $300 for the kneeskin. The ST Next still remains a solid option for entry-level swimmers. With a more budget-friendly price of $140 for the jammer and $200 for the kneeskin, it’s a great choice for parents of fast-growing children. It offers a good balance of performance without breaking the bank, making it ideal for those who plan to transition to the Impulso or higher-end racing suits once their child’s growth has settled.
In short, if you're in search of a suit that will last long, fits comfortably, and provides moderate compression, the Arena Impulso should be at the top of your list.
